Passion and talented mix of players keys to continuing Wildcats winning ways Shelby Burdette Angel Lopez Amanda Metzger By Rory Miller Assistant Sports Information Director When assessing the Chico State softball team s success over the past decade, the program s track record pretty much speaks for itself: over 300 victories, eight NCAA Championship Tournament appearances, a California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) title, and an NCAA Championship Tournament West Region crown. That the Wildcats have won with amazing consistency year in and year out is truly impressive, but to continue that high level of productivity poses an even bigger challenge. It s a goal that the 2020 edition of the Cats are determined to achieve. We re ready to play some games, Head Coach Angel Shamblin said on the eve of the new season. After a lot of work in the fall, we re anxious to get on the fleld and see what we re all about. I m excited about the returners we have coming back. I love our kids; we have a lot of good people that know what we want our culture to be about, and we have a lot of new talent coming aboard that we re really excited about. Now in her 11th season at the helm, Shamblin knows this year s Wildcat squad has a tough act to follow. Chico State posted a 31-17 record in 2019, flnishing second in the CCAA, and reaching the NCAA Championship Tournament for the flfth straight season. But the winningest coach in program history is also convinced she has assembled the perfect mix of game-tested veterans and productive new players to meet and possibly exceed the lofty standards that the team has set for itself. Shamblin is not the only one who feels that way. The Wildcats enter the 2020 campaign ranked No. 20 in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) preseason coaches poll, and have been picked to flnish second in the CCAA preseason poll. Two conference coaches chose the Cats to flnish atop the CCAA standings. Pitching continues to be a major strength for Chico State, and this season Shamblin may have put together the deepest and most talented staff the Wildcats have boasted in years. Whenever you return the conference s Pitcher of the Year, you ve got to like your chances, Shamblin said. She s referring, of course, to junior righthander Brooke Larsen, who in 2019 served as the workhorse of the staff. Larsen won 20 games, tossed seven shutouts, struck out 169 batters, and fashioned a miniscule 1.84 earned run average on the way to not only being named CCAA Pitcher and Newcomer of the Year, but also First Team All-West Region. If anchoring the pitching staff wasn t enough, Larsen was a key part of the Wildcats offensive attack, providing several clutch hits and batting.280 on the season. Larsen isn t the only hurler that is expected to produce big dividends in the pitcher s circle. Senior lefthander Sam Mulock enters her flnal year as a Wildcat with 23 career wins and a 2.08 earned run average. The San Diego product was 6-4 last season with a personal best 1.61 ERA. 4

After redshirting last season, sophomore righty Courtney Springman is ready to join the Cats pitching corps. As a true freshman in 2018, Springman won 16 games with 152 strikeouts and a 2.01 ERA at Division I Army, earning First Team All-Patriot League and Third Team NFCA All-Northeast Region honors. Chico State lost several power hitters to graduation, so it will be interesting to see what approach the Wildcats offense takes in 2020. While the Cats still have some players who can do some fence-busting, the new season may see the team employ more situational hitting and be a little faster and looser on the basepaths. What s interesting about our sport is sometimes you never know who you re going to be until you start playing, Shamblin said. When the 2018 team broke all of the program s hitting records, none of us would have guessed that we were going to set all those new marks. So we ll see where Team 52 flts in and what we re all about, and, whoever we are, we re going to try to focus on our strengths and make the best of it. As she has done since coming to Chico in 2017, senior shortstop Kristin Worley will be asked to set the tone for the Wildcat offense. Worley a three-time All-CCAA and All-West Region selection had another outstanding season in 2019, batting.378, posting a.480 on-base percentage, and stealing 27 bases, ranking in the CCAA top 10 in all three categories. Already a flxture in the Chico State record books, Worley enters the 2020 campaign with 96 career steals and needs just four swipes to become the Wildcats all-time stolen base leader. Junior inflelder Reilani Peleti is back and looking to build on her career-best 2019 season. The Santa Rosa native hit.336 last year with four home runs and 23 runs batted in, earning Second Team All-CCAA honors. Another productive hitter with home run power is junior inflelder/outflelder Angel Lopez, who hit.389 in 2019 while blasting three homers in just 54 at-bats. Amanda Metzger, who hit.297 with three home runs as a true freshman last season, will also be expected to carry a big part of the Wildcats offensive load. Junior Shelby Burdette and sophomore Rachael Atkins are sure to see plenty of playing time in 2020. Atkins displayed some power from the left side of the plate late last season, while the improved offensive skills Burdette displayed in the fall should give her many opportunities to contribute. Catcher Sara Mitrano will also play a key role for Chico State this season. Though her playing time was limited in her flrst two years as a Wildcat, Mitrano will be a force both in the lineup and behind the plate in 2020. Sara has paid her dues, Shamblin said. Her strength is that she s really connected with our pitchers, and has the ability to manage them really well. She swings the bat well, too. Sara is a hard worker and I m looking forward to giving her that opportunity that s well deserved. The Wildcats feature seven new players on the 2020 roster, and all have the potential to make an immediate impact. Fleetfooted junior Karter Williams comes to Chico after starring at Riverside College and earning First Team All-Orange Empire Conference and California Community College Fastpitch Coaches Association All-SoCal honors last season. Williams will not only beneflt the Cats ofensively with speed and power, but provide defensive exibility by being available to play multiple positions. Junior Virgie Robello is a transfer from Sierra College in Rocklin. A Second Team All-Big 8 Conference selection, the Wildcats can utilize the Sacramento product in both the infleld and outfleld. Junior Maddy Johnson, a two-time First Team All-Coast Conference South selection from Cabrillo College in Aptos, provides the Cats with additional depth in the outfleld, while sophomore catcher Jordan DiGiacinto, a transfer from Mercy College in Dobbs Ferry, New York, gives Chico State another power bat as well as offering solid defense behind the dish. The Wildcats also welcome in three true freshmen who will challenge for playing time. Drew Rodriguez (Cosumnes Oaks High School in Elk Grove) can anchor both corner infleld positions and provide another extra-base threat to the lineup, while Alani Nguyen (Paciflca High School in Buena Park) and Grace Gallagher (Del Campo High School in Fair Oaks) are two more players who add depth on the infleld while adding punch and production to the Cats offensive attack. Shamblin feels the always-competitive CCAA will be stronger from top to bottom this season than in the past several years, but she s confldent her newest batch of Wildcats will be able to hold their own. Our kids are not only hard-working, but they re gritty, Shamblin said. Teams hate to play us because of our energy and the excitement they bring to the game. Our players never give up, and that s just what this team is all about. And because of that, we ll always be a tough opponent. Since taking over the program in August 2009, she has transformed the Cats into an elite team within the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), an NCAA West Region power, and a player on the national softball stage. Shamblin s teams have posted a combined 341-187 record and eight postseason appearances, a CCAA and NCAA West Region title, and an appearance in the NCAA Division II Championship Finals. The Wildcats won at least 30 games in seven of Shamblin s flrst 10 seasons at the helm. In addition to reaching postseason play in each of the last flve seasons (another Chico State softball record), the Wildcats are an impressive 165-57 since 2016 (a.743 winning percentage). Under her tutelage, Shamblin s Chico State players have been just as successful, collecting 55 postseason conference awards, 41 All-West Region selections and four All-America honors. For her efforts, Shamblin was named the 2018 CCAA Coach of the Year, while she and her assistants were honored as the West Region Coaching Staff of the Year by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA). Chico State posted a 31-17 record in 2019, a second place flnish in the CCAA and the program s flfth straight appearance in both the conference tournament and NCAA Championship Tournament. The Cats were led by sophomore Brooke Larsen, who received First Team All-CCAA and All-West Region honors, and was named the conference s 2019 Pitcher and Newcomer of the Year. Kristin Worley and Amanda Flores were also All-CCAA and All-West Region selections. Chico State flnished the season ranked No. 21 in the nation. Shamblin and the Wildcats celebrated the program s 50th anniversary in a big way in 2018, posting a 55-6 record the most wins ever by a Chico State softball team, breaking the previous record by 15 victories and reaching the NCAA Division II Championship Finals for the flrst time since 2002. The Cats captured both the CCAA regular season and conference tournament crowns, and won flve of six contests to claim the NCAA West Region title. Chico State set 11 new single-season team records in 2018, including highest batting average (.320), runs scored (374), home runs (64), and pitching shutouts (24), while posting a perfect 23-0 record at home. The Wildcats ranked No. 7 in the season s flnal NFCA National Top 25 poll. As a result, Chico State players were showered with individual honors in 2018. Pitcher Haley Gilham, who set new Wildcat records for wins in a season (31) and career (87), while tossing a school record 32 career shutouts, was named All-America for the second time, as well as garnering First Team All-CCAA and All-West Region honors. Gilham also won CCAA Pitcher of the Year for the second straight year, and for the second consecutive season was a top 25 flnalist for NFCA Player of the Year. Karli Skowrup, who posted a program record 64 runs batted in, won All-CCAA, All-West Region, and All-America honors in 2018. Worley, Flores, Ari Marsh, Wendy Cardinali, Cyrena Taylor, Naomi Monahan, and Bailey Akins were All-CCAA selections, with Cardinali, Worley, Taylor, Flores, and Monahan receiving All-West Region accolades. Akins set a new Chico State singleseason record with 16 home runs on the year. Shamblin guided Chico State to a 39-18 record in 2017, with the Wildcats reaching the postseason for the third consecutive year. The Cats came within one victory of winning the CCAAChampionship Tournament, and reached the flnal day of the NCAA Championship Tournament West Sub-Regional played in Chico. Cailin Garmon smashed Chico State s single-season stolen base record, and her 53 swipes earned the senior speedster the NFCA/New Balance Golden Shoe award as the top base stealer in all of NCAA Division II softball. The Wildcats flnished the year ranked 19th in the nation by the NFCA. Shamblin s Wildcats posted a 40-16 record in 2016, tying a 37-year-old school record for victories in a single season. Chico State reached the flnals of both the CCAA Championship Tournament and NCAA West Sub-Regional to close out the campaign. The 2015 edition of the Wildcats flnished the season with a 29-22 record, with Shamblin steering Chico State into the CCAA Championship Tournament and earning the program s flrst NCAA Championship Tournament apprearance since 2012. With a team consisting of 11 new players, including eight freshmen, Shamblin led Chico State to a 24-24 record in 2013, flnishing in a tie for fourth place in the CCAA. The Cats stayed in contention for a conference tournament bid until being eliminated on the flnal day of the season. 6

Coaching Staff Shamblin led the Wildcats to a 35-18 record in 2012, placing third in the CCAA and reaching the NCAA West Regionals. Defensively, Chico State s.979 flelding percentage ranked third in the nation, while the Wildcats offense batted a collective.302. Shamblin guided the Wildcats to a 31-19 record in 2011, flnishing third in the CCAA and reaching both the CCAA Tournament and the NCAA West Regional. Among the season s many highlights was beating nationally-ranked Hawaii Paciflc and Western Washington to reach the flnals of the 22-team Mizuno Tournament of Champions, and becoming the flrst Chico State softball team ever to host an NCAA West Regional. Shamblin s flrst year as Wildcats head coach was particularly memorable. Inheriting essentially the same team that flnished 2009 with a 19-36 record, Shamblin led Chico State to a 33-21 record in 2010 a 14-win improvement over the previous year and the program s flrst winning season since 2005. The Cats wontheir last nine conference games to qualify for postseason play for the flrst time in four years. The Wildcats flnished the season just one win shy of reaching the NCAA Championship Finals, bowing to eventual national champion Hawaii Paciflc in the NCAA West Super Regional.
