Page 2 Corpus Christi Parish, Bay City April 10, 2022 From the Desk of Father Kelm HOMILY: Palm Sunday of the Passion of The Lord, Cycle C, 41022 Readings: Lk 19:2840 (before the Procession) Mass: Is 50:47 Phil 2:611 Lk 22:14 23:56 Opener: 1 Sam 15:22: Obedience is better than sacrifice. In a variety of places Scripture tells us that in humble obedience to God the Father, Jesus left His glory behind and assumed a human nature to Himself, being born into time by His humble mother, Mary evervirgin, to live in a lowly little village called Nazareth, to learn the honest, humble trade of carpentry, from His humble father St. Joseph. Jesus Procession to Jerusalem started near the towns of Bethphage and Bethany, located 2 miles East of Jerusalem. The word Bethphage means house of cheek bones and Bethany means house of obedience. The priests serving the Temple lived there. The heads and necks of the animal sacrifices belonged by law to the priests as their food. How s that for a humble dinner headcheese, vegetables, and fresh bread. The colt of an ass is another thread of the theme of humility. Unlike a horse, they are not rambunctious and they re not much for biting or kicking either, they are just humble, steady, reliable beasts of burden. They are obedient, submitting to heavy loadings, just as Christ bore our iniquities while sweating blood. The animal is patient as it tolerates mistreatment and beatings, just as Christ patiently endured His mistreatment at the hands of the Jews: beatings, scourging, crowning with thorns, reviling, crucifixion, etc If we follow Jesus lead, our humility will lead to being exalted in heaven (Lk 14:11), our patience will effect our eternal peace and for our obedience we shall receive a crown of glory (Jas 1:12). Keep fighting the good fight and that, for the rest of our lives. Luke 22:34 How often do we act or react similarly to Peter? Of course, it is easy to say that we know and follow Jesus when we are at church or with family or with fellow Catholics, but what about when someone outside of our Catholic circle makes a negative comment about our faith or God? Do we deny that we know Jesus by remaining silent? Do we not engage in conversation because of what people might think or because we are uncomfortable talking about the Church or Jesus? Pray for the strength to speak up, and always show, that you know and follow Jesus. THE DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY HERITAGE MASS will take place on April 22 @ 2:00 PM, at St. Stanislaus Kostka Church. Bishop Robert Gruss will preside at this liturgy. The Mass will conclude with praying the Divine Mercy Chaplet and Eucharistic Benediction. Your support helps the church minister in parishes, provide Catholic schools and offers religious education. The Pontifical Good Friday Collection also helps to preserve the sacred shrines. The pandemic hit particularly hard the Christians in the Holy Land. Most of them depend on pilgrimages to work. In these times of crisis, the Pontifical Good Friday collection is also necessary to meet the basic needs of the People of God still living in this Land where the Church was born. When you contribute to the Pontifical Good Friday Collection, you become an instrument of peace and join with Catholics around the world in solidarity with the Church in the Holy Land. A study conducted by the Universities of California and Chicago suggests it might cause health issues as well. As reported by Jessica and Tim Lahey in the Atlantic, researchers discovered that genes that fight viral infections are lower in socially isolated seniors. In addition, genes that cause inflammation and contribute to disease are higher. What can be done? The Laheys highlight a program in Lyme, New Hampshire, called Veggie Cares, which distributes local food to people living alone volunteers also deliver companionship. Visits may involve a shared cup of tea, an offer to replace burned out light bulbs, or a chance to check in on sick or elderly neighbors. Loneliness isn t always an obvious problem, but it s one we can all help fight. Reach out to those around you who may need nothing more than a friendly conversation to give their immune systems a boost. Creator, may we never undervaluate the gift of our presence.
